Once upon a time there was a woman who had been through hell, like so many women before her. Despite her best efforts, she found herself a single mom alone in an unfriendly world. Until she met her prince charming. She had prayed for him and looked for him. At times she had given up that she would find him. But almost like a fairy tale, he swept her off her feet when she was least expecting it, and they lived happily forever after.
I didn’t ever expect to have a fairy tale ending to my life. Life hasn’t always been easy for me and I’ve made many serious and stupid mistakes. I had long since given up on true love, figuring that I had screwed up enough when I was younger that I had missed out on my chance.
One hot June evening after a long day at work, I went over to a friend’s house to play Dungeons & Dragons. We were starting a new campaign and I had created an awesome character, a sorceress specializing in illusions. I was super excited and ready to get going. My small group of friends gathered and at the last minute the one person I didn’t know came down from his room in a pair of camo fleece pajama bottoms and a blanket wrapped around his shoulders. I didn’t pay much attention to him, but as we ate dinner together that night, we began to talk and realized we had a ton in common. He had served an LDS mission in my hometown – actually in the very building I was attending while he was on his mission. He had worked as a security guard at the company I was a supervisor at. The more we talked, the better we got along. But I didn’t remember his name that night when I left.
Over the weeks, we became better friends and I actually remembered his name after about a month. I was in a bad relationship, abusive and destructive, but I was unaware of how bad it was at the time and wasn’t looking to get out of it. With the help of my friends, I realized I needed a change and my new found friend Kevin was a trustworthy support for me. He was smart, spiritual and we could talk for hours about everything. I was in denial about my attraction towards him, but looking back now, I found myself seeking out opportunities to be alone with him and to talk to him.
When things happened, they happened fast and we haven’t been apart since. He literally swooped in on his orange steed and rescued me when I was in danger, without thought for his own safety. A little under a year later, we were married and life has been consistently happy ever since.
However, we had a goal. As members of the LDS Church, we wanted to go to the temple and seal our family for all time and eternity. Those who know me would tell you how long I’ve waited to have this opportunity. Because I had already done this with my first husband, there were details that had to be worked out and we were waiting patiently. On Christmas Eve, we were given the all clear. It was the best gift I’ve ever received.
On Saturday, January 28th, 2017, Kevin and I were sealed in the Bountiful temple for all time and eternity. Our closest family and friends joined us and in a very small and quiet ceremony we made promises to God and to each other, and through the Priesthood, our marriage was made eternal – not just ’til death do us part.
I love Kevin the Riveter. He is my best friend and my closest confidant. I am grateful for the man that he is, for the father he is to our children, and for his unending support of me. I can’t imagine someone I’d rather spend all eternity with.
